Falsafa (literally, "philosophy"), which includes logic, mathematics, and physics in its definition, and Kalam (literally, "speaking"), which designates a rationalist branch of Islamic theology, are two names that have historically been employed in the Islamic world.
Early Islamic philosophy roughly corresponds to the time period known as the Golden Age of Islam, starting with Al-Kindi in the second century of the Islamic calendar (early 9th century CE) and ending with Averroes (Ibn Rushd) in the sixth century AH (late 12th century CE).
